Social media is as popular globally as it is in the U.S. In fact, social media in Asia accounts for 2 billion users! The highest users are in China, Taiwan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, and the Philippines. China alone has more than 1 billion users. South America also has high usage levels — Statista states 5 out of the top 20 nations come from South America — Argentina, Columbia, Venezuela, Chile, and Peru. In the Middle East, social media usage has doubled in the last 5 years with Turkey, Bahrain, and Israel all being high users of Instagram. Half of the population of Africa is under 20, so as the continent continues getting connected, usage is only going to increase.
Demographics vary, but according to Global Stats, Facebook leads in social media usage overall. Even in the U.S., 51% of 13-17 year olds and 76% of 18-24 year olds use Facebook, according to Pew Research. Leading countries on Instagram include the U.S., India, Brazil, Indonesia, and Russia. On Facebook and Instagram, India far surpasses the U.S., and it’s followed by Indonesia, Brazil, Mexico, Philippines, and Vietnam. On Twitter, it’s the U.S., Japan, India, Brazil, the UK, and Turkey.
It’s important to know there’s always something new to try on platforms. Have you tried Instagram Reel? Is it a threat to TikTok or just another tool?
The long and short of it is, with more than 4 billion people using social media, think of your reach and how critical it is for your brand messaging to be on these platforms.
