Connect With Students Digitally

3/31/2020

Picture
We know that in the immediate future most in-person recruiting and travel will be canceled. However, students who are now just starting to look for US programs now may not start a program for another 18 months to two years, which is why your school’s visibility on digital and print is more important than ever.

Right now, social media is a strong and viable connection to international students. You can share videos, testimonials, or social media posts that keep you in the feeds of students worldwide.

To Our Valued Partners

At Study in the USA, the safety and well-being of our partners, students, and the global community is our top priority.

Study in the USA understands that this is an unprecedented and challenging time for international education. Our thoughts are with all of those affected around the world. We are committed to doing everything possible to support you and your international students during this time of uncertainty and challenging circumstances.

We know that right now in-person recruiting and travel may need to be canceled.

Here are free, remote steps you can take that can help keep prospective students aware of your institution for the future:

  1. Ask your alumni to host small, informational events in their home country - you can video conference in but your alumni can help with being there in person.
  2. Make sure you have testimonials from your current international students on your website - make sure these are short and to the point.
  3. Consider launching a student blogger program - check out our bloggers here.

Our team is here to help and we encourage you to reach out to discuss how we can be of assistance.

Thank you for your partnership and continued trust.

Things You Can Do Right Now in Response to the Virus

3/23/2020

Picture
The outbreak of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) has created a challenging situation for many, and we empathize with everybody including universities and students around the world who have been affected. There are currently students unable to travel to their home countries as well as others who cannot return to the U.S. Additionally, many education fairs in China and around Asia have been cancelled due to the outbreak. The impact is also felt by international admissions as some may defer their admissions to a later date. It's important that you keep in touch with your students, provide them with information, and keep your channels of communication open.

Things You Can Do Right Now in Response to the Virus

  1. Prioritize making your students feel safe.
  2. Create a web page where everyone including students, parents, and faculty can find the latest information on how the outbreak affects them.
  3. Adapt your messaging. Be sensitive to the tone of your communication surrounding the virus.
  4. Be prepared to answer any questions regarding your institution’s policies and responses to the virus. Anticipate the need to adjust with each new development and be ready to respond quickly.
  5. Offer flexibility in your application deadlines and intake process. For example, with TOEFL and IELTS delaying their testing schedules, schools that can adjust admissions criteria around testing will stand out.
  6. If your current recruitment plan relies heavily on China, consider diversifying your target regions. With the uncertain effects of the virus, this may be a good time to consider increasing investment in other markets.

4 Hacks to Improve International Student Engagement on Campus

4 Hacks to Improve International Student Engagement on Campus

Written by Mim Philips, Study in the USA

Somewhere in the mix of reading applications, actively recruiting, helping students understand the OPT/CPT process, advising and planning activities, you’re creating your strategic marketing plan for the upcoming school year and are implementing some of it.

However, as you know, international student mobility is dynamic and geopolitically influenced, which means plans might need to be altered. I say “control what you can control,” starting with better student engagement on campus, which in turn can influence your recruitment numbers — because students talk. That communication can stretch all the way back to their high schools, social media, friends, and family.

  1. Really listen. Plan your programming according to what your international students need. Simply put, find out what they need by asking them. Create a focus group and really get to know your students. That means spending time with them; conduct a survey to assess if your organization is doing all it can (within its resources). For example, students could be concerned about jobs and finding an OPT after graduation. Talk to the career center and find out how it’s helping international students.
  2. Empower your students. Trust that your international students will lead the way. In one school, I started an International Student Advisory Board. We asked the students to write the Board’s mission, and plan and connect with departments across campus once they assessed pain points and priorities.
  3. Seek out international professors on campus. They relate and can provide unique guidance because many of them were international students themselves. Create dialog opportunities to include meetings with international students and professors.
  4. Be real. International students know if you truly want to help them. It’s not enough to just welcome international students to your campus. They want to know if you’re standing alongside and advocating for them. Providing that sense of belonging can start from the moment they step on your campus.

Fairs are a powerful tool for student recruitment and that’s why Study in the USA magazines do so well. Thousands of motivated international students visit educational fairs. Students and parents have a personal experience, meeting people and picking up brochures and magazines that they can pore over for days.

“And, oh, how the students and parents love your magazine! They snatch them up like candy!” -Dynamic Language Centre Penang, Malaysia
